Finding Hot Topics On Facebook Using Their 4 New Apps

By Bilal Amed

If you have been on Facebook for a number of years, you know that there are several ways that you can do polls. There are apps that will allow you to find out what people who have friended you are thinking about topics that you bring up. But up until now, there hasn't been a way to find out what the global audience of Facebook, it's over 1.2 billion users, are thinking about at any given time. To do this, for applications have been made by Facebook, released at their latest F8 summit. Here's a quick overview of what these four applications are able to do, and why they are beneficial for both people using Facebook, and businesses today.

Overview Of The Four API Apps

A quick overview of these applications shows that Facebook is trying to provide real-time data for its users and businesses around the world. The Trending app allows people to look at a personalized, and depersonalized, list of trends that are currently happening. There is a Topic Feed that ranks the content by topic, and a hashtag counter that shows which hashtags are performing the best. Finally, there is a Topic Insights at which will show information about users that are creating the trends in the topics, based upon geography, gender and age.

How To Use These Apps

Although there are many reasons that people would use these applications, for businesses, it has many possibilities. When taking polls of what people are thinking about real-time, especially during large media events such as an election, American Idol, or even the Superbowl, people can learn what is trending, what topics are hot, and use this information to potentially market to these individuals. This is perfect for businesses that are trying to find out what is trending right now, something that only Twitter has had available for businesses to use up until this point in time.

Although Facebook has over 1 billion users, they have been struggling in regard to providing live data for news media outlets. During the Superbowl, or even American Idol, they do not have the applications, like Twitter does, that allows people to quickly find out what is trending right away. This has caused Facebook to develop for new apps that will allow newsagency's, and Facebook users, to find out what is happening right now.
