SEO and Niche Markets for Home Businesses

Expert Author Leisha K Henry
There are a lot of home business opportunities out there on the internet:

This can have implications for your businesses success. Are you entering a field where there is a lot of competitors? Will it be difficult for you to implement SEO (Search Engine Optimisation)? Is it a market which you are interested in? Is it a unique market (a niche market)?
You must be interested in what you're selling:
A lot of "Internet Gurus" talk about niche marketing, which involves finding a market which is popular but has little competitors. It is also a small market, so your future clients and customers will be a select, targeted group of people. This is supposed to make selling easier. However, unless you're actually knowledgable, and interested in what you're selling- choosing a niche market just for the sake of it isn't a good idea. For instance, "vintage guitars" is a niche market. However, just because I have a background in music, doesn't mean that I'm interested or knowledgeable in the field of vintage guitars. So if you can- choose a niche market which you already like, and will enjoy learning about.
If you choose a niche market, then your chances of SEO success are greater:
This is probably true. However, SEO does require more than just choosing a niche market. There are things such as keyword research, analytics etc. which go into being successful with SEO. But if you can choose a niche market which is popular and you do the right things with SEO... then you can build a successful online presence. Remember that you must always remind yourself about what you're selling. Always try to give value to your customers and clients. Try to be knowledgeable in the field that you are entering... in other words "walk the walk". There are many people online trying to sell things just to make a quick buck. And even though they are SEO and internet marketing experts... something about them always feels un-ethical and false. Don't be afraid to take more time to build your online businesses by building them with a sense of integrity and an understanding of long-term rewards, versus short-term rewards. Some internet marketers can value and promote short-term gains over long-term gains. If you're truly interested in your clients and customers, then you won't want to expose them to hyped up marketing. You will choose a market which you're interested in and adds value to their lives as a consumer... and you will approach SEO with integrity.
