Not many people think of dancing when wondering how to make improvements in one's health and lifestyle. However, folks that have been active social dancers for a while know what positive changes can be had from this highly addictive and pleasurable activity. A quick look at the many dance blogs that are rapidly appearing all over the internet will show there are numerous benefits from taking up dancing, besides learning to perform some nifty moves to impress family and friends.

Newcomers, especially, will soon discover that doing the Swing, or learning how to Salsa or Tango involves more than just learning the right steps. However, what is important - and this is probably the biggest motive for becoming a frequent social dancer - is that it is sheer fun. And, bar individuals with serious physical limitations, anyone can learn to perform in the delightful art form.

People that dance often build, and maintain, fit, healthy bodies in a short time. This is the kind of workout everyone enjoys, since when dancing, the individual is hardly aware of all the physical effort that goes into the moves. All the major muscle groups get a thorough workout, the body becomes more flexible and stronger, and the dancer also develops a better posture and a more elegant bearing.

Regular social dancing is probably the most fun way in which to lose excess fat, and to maintain a healthy body weight. Moreover, it helps the heart to pump ample blood through the physical system, thereby keeping all the vital organs functioning like clockwork. Many experienced dancers will attest to the fact that it is also the most entertaining way to get rid of stress, and build energy.

Since regular dancing is excellent for stress release, it's good for emotional health. The social aspect of this activity helps to curb loneliness and isolation as well, especially for individuals that have a hard time making friends. In addition, many that take up this art form especially appreciate feeling invigorated, energetic, and experiencing sound, uninterrupted sleep.

Social dancers of necessity strike up friendships and relationships with dancing partners, among others. This has many benefits, and is especially good for folks struggling with problems of social isolation and loneliness. The great thing is one would be mixing with others that share a common interest, which is one of the reasons many newcomers to this activity undergo positive lifestyle changes relatively quickly.

Learning and remembering dance steps involves complex brain functions. These differ from how people ordinarily think when going through the motions of every day life. Hence, dancing not only gives the body a workout, but also engages the mind in positive ways. Some believe that through regularly performing the kinds of dances involved in form of art, people can prevent the occurrence of dementia and Alzheimer's disease.

The primary appeal of swinging and swaying with others to the sounds of music lies in the sheer enjoyment it brings. It is difficult to go through the manoeuvres of a Salsa or Tango, for example, and not feel elation and joy. Never mind the fact that it requires consistent, hard work to pull it off, it brings both dancers and onlookers pleasure, and that's what matters most in the end.
