All About Prisoner Transport Systems

By Mattie Knight

This is a very sensitive area when it comes to security and a lot of stress should be put on it. Transportation done is mainly of convicts who are capable of causing harm or many other bad things. The personnel guarding them and their means of transport hence have to be chosen carefully and with a lot of safety measures. For the delivery to be done successfully the guidelines below should be followed on prisoner transport systems.

The transport vehicle is the first thing to put a lot of emphasis on. The vehicle is specially designed for the task and usually a bus or van is used on the carriage from a secure place such as prisons or court houses to another. In other areas railcars, vessels or aircraft can be used but that is rarely used.

Safety on these vehicles is ensured by having bars and wire mesh covering the windows. They also contain bullet proof glasses for extra security. Radio communication gadgets are also equipped as there can be isolation from other guards during transporting. Carrying extra weapons and use of position units is advisable for easy tracking.

The police officers operating these vehicles should be highly trained professionals. They mainly are from the correctional or court services; hence, have proper experience to handle the inmates. There is initial training on how to properly handle the prisoners. If they are passing through dangerous places, an escort of two or more police cars is available for enough back up.

Incidents involving mistreatment of the prisoners on transportation is common. Therefore, there is need to install security cameras all over the vans. In case of abuse, there will be crude evidence from the video recording which can help in solving the disputes. If the car is attacked, it can be easy to identify the attackers through these cameras as the event is recorded.

The vehicles used in transportation should be large in order to transport a lot of prisoners at a time. This helps in reduction of the cost incurred through fuel, vehicle lease and maintenance. Some of the drivers work on contracts thus the few times they are on the move the less the payment they will demand. There should also be planned effective schedules hence ensuring prisoners are delivered to required regions on time.

Ensuring the safety of convicts by maintaining their health and welfare must be highly considered. Special cages built in these vans reduce the mixing of inmates of opposite sex or young ones with adults. The conditions in terms of temperature should be well maintained by use of equipments to regulate this.

By ensuring all this, the prison transport system will provide very good services and also avoid the cases of mistreatment on transportation. Provision of better facilities will ensure no problems occur during the voyage and that everything is done on time and according to the schedule. The security officers will also ensure that they are at all times safe.
