By Barbara Reynolds

Many are enjoying the cooking process these days, as foodie culture allows people to experiment with different kitchen gadgets and flavors. The blending of cultures lets the average person experiment, possibly giving new life to old recipes in the process. One tool that cooks find it hard to live without are herb grinders, which save time and labor.

Time saving tools are a good investment for the person who enjoys tasting their food. While there are many seasoning blends made with dried herbs and spices, these often have a lot of salt and fillers. Even though the prepacked products may have a long shelf life, the fresh taste is incomparable.

Anyone who has cooked with herbs knows that the preparation can take a lot of time when using knife or kitchen shears. Some cooks like to use their hands but then they may have a strong herbal scent on their person long after leaving the kitchen. Grinders save time and cleanup is easier, which can be beneficial to those who cook meals often.

Whether a person cooks a little or a lot, herbal seasonings may be used with almost any dish. Breakfast, snacks, and any meal in between may have use for extra flavor. It can be mixed in or used as a colorful garnish. When there is too much made, there is no need to dispose of it. Using a freezer bag, freshly cut herbs can stay in the refrigerator for weeks.

Anyone who experiments in the kitchen will have fun trying the many herbs on the market today. The variety includes spicy flavors to those that may not have heat but a unique taste. Some creations are a combination of spices, natural herb pieces and fruit, which can be a nice marinade or colorful food garnish that may replace gravy or sauces.

Using herbal blends is a good way to eliminate the use of things like salt and sugar. These ingredients, along with saturated fats like butter, are used in excess at many restaurants. Even if a dish seems healthy, it is wise to eat out sparingly. Cooking more meals at home is best for anyone that wants to maintain their health. Ideally, the intense flavor from fresh herbs and spices is made to bring out the natural flavor in food. Desserts made with plenty of spice may benefit further with a sugar substitute, which may help reduce the calories.

People looking to change their diet for health reasons should consider using herbs in their daily cooking, especially if the goal is to reduce salt intake. This can help most illnesses like lowering blood pressure, reducing sugar in the blood or other medical problems. For centuries, garlic is known to have many medicinal qualities.

Those edibles that grow from the earth can be some of the best tasting ingredients in any recipe. Like fruits and vegetables, preparation does not have to be a job, as there are time savers. Once a person uses this to make meals, they will find it more convenient than getting out a food processor.
